Individual Therapy

One of the overlooked and under estimated aspects of therapy is finding a counselor that is a “good fit”. There are hundreds of strategies and theoretical perspectives in counseling, how do you know if your therapist is operating from the orientation that’s right for you? Research shows that eighty percent of the effectiveness of therapy is not about the framework from which the counselor operates, but the relationship itself. So how do you choose?

When I was learning to drive I had multiple adults in my life offer to teach me. One person talked incessantly, offering insights and advice nonstop. Another was completely silent, leaving me to my own (inexperienced) devices. Fortunately, I had a third driving coach, my uncle, who managed to balance, verbally assisting me when necessary with trusting my capabilities. His support was calm, dependable and never underestimated my abilities.

I’ve seen a number of counselors throughout my life and I’ve come to realize that I appreciate certain qualities. I have been deeply influenced by my own experience as both client and teacher. Counselors that talk excessively or too little or offer advice, don’t work for me.

I value working in collaboration with clients, not dictating a direction, but helping to point out the terrain. The terrain is specific to your life experiences, values and desires. I can help interpret the signs and sights of the road, in a sensitive and empathetic way. While I won’t give you advice, I will help you access your own values and wisdom. I will also help you cultivate self-compassion as well as better understand yourself through the lens of attachment theory, biology and psychology.

I am looking forward to meeting you and assisting you in your journey down the road of life.
